It was in the 19th century, greatly influenced by the colonies, that the fashion of Orientalism was at its height.
From these distant lands came textiles of stunning colours and warm hues which brought great life and gaiety to the apartments of the period.
This europeanized exoticism first appeared in England, where the Brighton Pavilion is a particularly fine example. In France manufacturers soon started to give a colonial slant to their production for the great exhibitions of the time.
